Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with Bridget Brink, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, in Baku, the Foreign Ministry informed on February 6.

Mammadyarov briefed Brink about the negotiation process on resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and underlined the importance of strengthening the efforts by the U.S. along with other OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs for the fair and just settlement of the conflict based on the UN Security Council resolutions.

The FM said that the attempts to alter the internationally recognized borders of states by use of force are unacceptable.

He further noted that Azerbaijan is interested in further development of relations with the U.S.

Speaking about the fundamental economic reforms conducted in Azerbaijan, Mammadyarov mentioned the importance of redoubling joint efforts for the development of economic relations and active involvement of U.S. companies in the non-oil sector of Azerbaijan.

Brink, in turn, emphasized the necessity of reinforcing the political dialogue on strategic partnership between the two countries and said that her country attaches importance to the relations with Azerbaijan. She noted the necessity of further development of current bilateral cooperation.

The U.S. official highly appreciated the contribution of Azerbaijan to the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan as part of the fight against terrorism.

During the meeting, the sides also discussed energy and transport projects being implemented by the initiative of Azerbaijan, especially the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the Southern Gas Corridor projects. The parties also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.

American co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Andrew Schofer and U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta also participated in the meeting.

Azerbaijan and the U.S. established diplomatic relations in 1992. Today, the two countries work to promote European energy security, expand trade and investment, and combat terrorism and transnational threats. The U.S. is committed to strengthening democracy and promoting economic diversification in Azerbaijan.

Currently, the U.S. companies are actively involved in the development of Caspian hydrocarbons in offshore Azerbaijani oilfields, and the U.S. government actively supported the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline as the primary route of transportation for Caspian oil.
