French art group to perform in Baku
By Nigar Orujova
Yarat Contemporary Art Space will introduce Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet of Les gens d'Uterpan, who will visit Azerbaijan for the first time.
Vigier and Apertet, in partnership with the CAC Bretigny, will develop the construction and diffusion of several performances - The X-Event.
The creations will highlight and question the borders that exist between dance and plastic arts concerning the exhibition of living art.
This attitude creates different ways of managing dancers, choreographers, and spectators, and helps to push the boundaries of traditional choreography.
The artists will show their performances at Yay Gallery and the Museum Center. They will also give a lecture about their performances at the International Center of Mugham. The organizers offer free entrance to all activities.
Each X-Event performance runs under the baritone of Victor Torres. Directing solutions by Nicholas Martz define the role and functional significance of the music.
Yay Gallery will host X-Event 2.6 "Le gout" performance & video exhibition at 18:00 on March 23.
The dancers will walk freely inside a defined space. The performance begins with eye contact of the dancers with each other and visitors. The dancers do not talk; they sit or lie down on the ground ignoring people gazing at them. This action will continue for several hours.
The gallery will also project several video recordings of the work by Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet shot during previous activities since March 23.
The Museum Center will hold X-Event 2.3 "Les chutes" at 19:00 on March 24.
During the event, a group of dancers will push each other, throwing one another out of the central perimeter defined by two crossing trajectories. After falling, each dancer gets up and re-enters the perimeter in order to push another dancer or be pushed and fall again. The action will continue until the group's energy is exhausted.
One principle used in the X-Event is that of reversibility, a tactic which ineluctably gives rise to the reverse situation via the imposition of constraints and extreme limitations of contexts on performers: the liberation of individualities and an acute awareness of place.
Finally, the dancers will give a lecture at International Mugham Center at 15:00 on March 25.
Apertet and Vigier will discuss the re-action process and its stakes and goals using some of the 17 strategies that are involved. Visitors will have a chance to ask questions and debate with the choreographer.
This program is organized by YARAT Contemporary Art Space and supported by the Institut Français d'Azerbaïdjan, with the acknowledged support of the European Cultural Foundation/STEP beyond.
Their work has been previously presented in Ireland, the UK, Switzerland, Colombia, Brazil, Poland, Austria, Germany, Corea, the USA, China, Croatia, Lithania, France, and Italy.
