By Nazrin Gadimova
Azerbaijani movies were screened at the "Mostra de filmes do Azerbaijao" festival in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and San Paolo on August 6 through 11. The event was organized by Azerbaijani embassy in Brazil, Azerbaijani Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Bank of Brazil Culture Center.
Seven movies, which demonstrated Azerbaijani culture and society, included "Girov" (Hostage) (2005), "40-ci Gapi" (The 40th Door) (2009), "Ilahi makhlug" (Divine Creature) (2011), "Niyyat" (The Intention) (2010), "Sahe" (The District) (2010), "Buta" (2011), "O olmasin, bu olsun" (If not this, then that) (1956).
These films highlight key features of Azerbaijani cinema, its diversity and creative richness. Recall that earlier they have been awarded at different international festivals.
At the opening ceremony Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Brazil Elnur Sultanov said this project would contribute to the Azerbaijan-Brazil cultural exchange. He informed the audience about the history of the Azerbaijani cinematography, as well as state programs on the development of Azerbaijani cinematography.
After the show a debate about the Azerbaijani cinema was held.
The Brazilian media largely covered the cultural event.
A couple of weeks ago the film community in Azerbaijan celebrated the 115th anniversary of Azerbaijani cinematography. August 2, 1898 is considered to be the date when the history of Azerbaijani cinema begins. Notably, the film industry in Azerbaijan was established almost at the same time as the invention of moviemaking.
