Uzbekistan, China agree on international transport issues

Uzbekistan and China reached an agreement on the establishment of mutual exchange of permit forms for international road transport of goods between the two countries.

“In order to create favorable conditions for national road haulers, it was also agreed that the vehicles of Uzbekistan can seamlessly transport goods through the territory of the People's Republic of China. A mutual commitment to the widest possible opportunities for international road transport between Uzbekistan and China was noted,” the Uzbek Agency of Automobile and River Transport reported.

The intergovernmental agreement between Uzbekistan and China on international road transport came into force on January 1, 2018.

The parties granted each other the right to international road transport on the territory of their states by vehicles registered on the territory of one of the countries along routes determined by mutual agreement of the competent authorities.

Under the terms of the document, bilateral and transit transportations will be carried out on the basis of permits issued by the competent authorities of the two countries - the Uzbek Agency of Road and River Transport and the Chinese Ministry of Transport. The competent authorities will annually pass to each other an agreed number of permit forms for the transport of goods.

Currently, the transportation of goods between Uzbekistan and China is carried out mainly by rail through Kazakh-Chinese checkpoints, which entails significant expenses and time costs.

The cost of transportation of one container by rail on the route Khorgos (China) - Altynkol - Almaty (Kazakhstan) - Tashkent - Asaka (Uzbekistan) with a length of 1570 km is more than $2,600.

According to preliminary estimates, this figure is 20 percent higher compared to transportation by road along the route Tashkent - Irkeshtam - Kashgar (about 600 km).

At the end of October this year, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China successfully organized the first pilot caravan of nine cars that passed along this route.
