Azerbaijan wins European powerlifting cup

29 May 2008 20:29 (UTC+04:00)
The Azerbaijani team won the European powerlifting championship held in Novy Bor, Czech Republic, last week.
Eight athletes representing Azerbaijan brought home five gold and two silver titles, and a bronze medal.
A total of 400 athletes from countries across Europe competed in the tournament that featured powerlifting and bench-press events.
The victorious Azerbaijani athletes - Namig Jafarov, Ilham Allahverdiyev, Sarkhan Aliyev, Bayram Aliyev, Ibrahim Ibrahimov, Yalchin Bagirov, and Bakhtiyar Guliyev - vied in five weight brackets ranging from 67.5 to 110 kg. They accomplished the best results in all three events - 250 kg in bench-press, 345 kg in squat and 350 kg in dead-lift.
The performance of Jafarov, Azerbaijan's three-time champion and silver winner of the 2006 World and European Championships, was particularly remarkable. Jafarov, who lost hope for recuperation after the injury he received in 2007, had previously decided to retire. But thanks to the efforts of doctors and the World Telecom company which incurred his treatment expenses, he managed to make an impressive comeback and claim the title. Competing in the 82.5 kg bracket, he sealed a confident win, with the top 250 kg indicator in bench-press.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports provided a great deal of assistance to the Azerbaijani team as it cruised to victory at the European Cup.
