Turkey seeks UN aid in enforcing Caucasus peace plan
Turkey has sought assistance from the United Nations in implementing its recent proposal to set up a five-nation union called the Caucasus Peace and Cooperation Platform.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul made the statement while addressing the ongoing UN General Assembly session. Gul said he had held talks on ways of realizing the initiative with Azeri and Armenian leaders. Moreover, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who initiated the proposal following a brief war between Russia and Georgia early in August, witnessed approval of this idea during his recent visits to the two countries.
According to Gul, establishing the platform will facilitate resolution of "frozen" conflicts, including the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh dispute, within the territorial integrity of states.
Ankara believes the platform could be joined by Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, and Georgia.
The Turkish president said the platform will create an opportunity to hold fair discussions on problems facing the region and to establish a beneficial framework for building mutual confidence.
Touching on the Iraq and Afghanistan issues, Gul said much effort was being made to ensure the security and prosperity of the Iraqi and Afghan people, and voiced confidence that Pakistan and Afghanistan would develop cooperation.
With regard to the Cyprus problem, Gul said Ankara backed diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution and uniting two states with equal rights into one solid state.
Gul said Turkey has not been represented in the UN Security Council for about 50 years and thereby sought assistance for his country`s membership in 2009-2010.*
