New seismic stations to be placed around nuclear plant in Armenia

New seismic stations to be placed around the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant are already in Armenia, the chief of the National Seismic Protection Service MOE Hrachya Petrosyan said at a meeting of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), Panorama.am reports.

According to him, the new stations will soon be placed around the plant, that is the present old stations will be replaced by modern digital ones. All data obtained from there will be submitted to the Crisis Management Centre of MES.

Petrosyan also added that old seismic equipment will be stored at the MES museum.

Metsamor NPP was built in 1970. After the devastating earthquake in Spitak in 1988 it was closed, but in 1995 despite international protests, the operation of the station were resumed. Moreover, the second reactor was launched.

According to ecologists and scientists, seismic activity in the area makes the operation of the nuclear plant in Metsamor extremely risky even in the case of construction of a new model reactor.
