Georgia, U.S. discuss danger of Russian military base in Armenia

Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze and US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns have discussed the danger posed by the Russian military base in Armenia.

"The situation in the region regarding the concentration of Russian military forces in North Caucasus and their transfer to Gyumri, which endangers the region, was discussed," Vashadze said.

The upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia, along with the situation in the Caucasus region and issues of cooperation within international organizations, were also on the agenda of the meeting.

The parties also mulled the participation of international observation missions in the election process.

The Russian military base has been based in the Gyumri region in the north of Armenia since 1995, and is on combat duty under the auspices of the CIS air defense system.

The base is equipped with Zenith rocket launchers and MiG-29 fighter jets. The number of troops at the base amounts to 5,000.
