GUAM foreign ministers to meet in Ukraine
KYIV – Foreign ministers of the member states of GUAM, a group of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, will hold their next meeting in Kyiv on February 24 to discuss prospects for the organization’s development, the GUAM secretariat said.
Chairmanship in GUAM will be transferred from Georgia to Moldova at the Foreign Ministers Council’s meeting.
Though the meeting was initially scheduled for January, it was postponed till the end of February as Moldova’s foreign minister had not been appointed.
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will represent Azerbaijan at the talks.
GUAM was established in 1997 at the EU summit in Strasbourg. Uzbekistan joined the organization in 1999 but seceded four years later. During the organization's first summit in Kyiv in 2006, a decision was made to announce GUAM an international organization and rename it into the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM.
