Ireland’s Ambassador to the United States, Geraldine Byrne Nason, will officially open this year’s Kennedy Summer School in New Ross on Thursday, 27 August.

Following her opening remarks at St Michael’s Theatre, Byrne Nason will take part in a fireside discussion with Professor Mary C Murphy, Director of the Irish Institute at Boston College, AzerNEWS reports, citing businessplus.ie.

Murphy’s research focuses on post-Brexit Northern Ireland and relations between the European Union and the United States.

The discussion will be introduced by Kennedy Summer School chair Eileen Dunne and will mark the return of the Irish Institute at Boston College to the festival, continuing a tradition associated with the late Bob Morrow.

Byrne Nason, a native of County Louth, previously served as Ireland’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where she led the country’s successful campaign for a seat on the UN Security Council.

She has also held diplomatic postings in Paris and Brussels during a distinguished career with Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs.

The opening programme will also feature a short recital by Finghin Collins, artistic founding director of the New Ross Piano Festival, which is marking its 20th anniversary.

The recital will be followed by a drinks reception in the courtyard of St Michael’s Theatre.
