Visa-free entry to Georgia for Caucasus residents

MOSCOW – Russian citizens living in the North Caucasus republics can enjoy visa-free travel to Georgia from October 13, The Voice of Russia reported.

The decree was issued by President Mikhail Saakashvili. Moscow has branded Tbilisi’s initiative blatant propaganda.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov clarified that civilized partners discuss such issues on a reciprocal basis. "It looks more like yet another propagandist move," he added.

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said on Monday that Georgia was planning to introduce a visa-free regime with Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Adygeya.

Tbilisi severed diplomatic ties with Moscow after a five-day war in August 2008 over Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Russia recognized South Ossetia and another breakaway republic, Abkhazia, shortly after ceasefire.

Tbilisi's interests in Russia are represented by the Swiss Embassy.
