Abu Dhabi welcomes Uber and WeRide autonomous taxis
By Alimat Aliyeva
Uber Technologies Inc. and WeRide Inc. launched Level 4 driverless robotaxi operations in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, marking the first commercial rollout of fully autonomous rides on the Uber platform outside the United States, Azernews reports, citing foreign media.
In a joint announcement, the companies confirmed that the service is supported by the world’s first city-level permit for fully driverless robotaxis issued by a non-US authority. Public operations have begun on Yas Island, with routes gradually expanding under the supervision of Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre.
Earlier this year, Uber and WeRide also announced a robotaxi project in Dubai, aiming to make 25% of all trips in the city autonomous across multiple transport modes by 2030.
Abu Dhabi rollout highlights the rapid adoption of autonomous mobility in the Middle East, where favorable regulations, advanced infrastructure, and high urban density create ideal conditions for testing and scaling driverless technology. Experts predict that such initiatives could significantly reduce traffic congestion and urban emissions while paving the way for a new era of on-demand autonomous transport.
