Georgian FM rules out rumors on confederation with Azerbaijan

TBILISI – Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze ruled out rumors that his country is planning to create a confederation with Azerbaijan.

Vashadze said that President Mikheil Saakashvili's statement earlier this week about a possibility of establishing a confederation with Azerbaijan should not be taken out of context. The president was simply stressing the strong relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan, he added.

"The president has repeatedly said that the relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia have grown out of a framework of strategic relations and have assumed the character of ties typical between countries in a confederation.

"This does not mean that we would create a single legislative framework and combine our constitutions."

However, Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said earlier that the talks have been held to set up a confederation, although a number of "technical issues" are still under discussion.
