Clinton’s visit to ‘genocide’ monument upsets Turkey
ISTANBUL - Turkey has protested at US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton’s paying tribute on Monday to the monument to the alleged
Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians during her visit to the Armenian
capital Yerevan, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has
said.
Davutoglu told the local TGRT TV channel that Clinton’s visit to
the site was not official, but personal, but Ankara was discontent
with the move nonetheless.
The minister added that the US officials who were part of the
delegation did not issue any verbal or written statements during
their visit to the monument site.
Armenians residing in the Anatolia region fought against the
Ottoman army in support of Russia during World War I. In an effort
to end the stand-off, the Ottoman government decided to resettle
the Armenians to other parts of the country in 1915. Armenians
claim their forefathers were subjected to "genocide" in the
process, while Ankara dismisses the claims and has offered
conducting joint historical research.*
