PACE president to visit Armenia

11 May 2010 22:20 (UTC+04:00)
PACE president to visit Armenia
The president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mevlut Cavusoglu, will pay a visit to Armenia May 12-13.
He will meet President Serzh Sarkisian, Parliament Speaker Ovik Abramian, Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian, members of different political parties represented in the National Assembly, and opposition leaders.
He will also meet Davit Harutyunyan, chair of the standing committee responsible for the monitoring of implementation of the recommendations made by the ad hoc PACE committee to inquire into the violent March 1-2, 2008 clashes that followed the country’s presidential elections.
Meanwhile, the ultra-nationalist Dashnaktsutyun party decided to boycott the upcoming discussions with the PACE president and refused to attend the planned meeting with Cavusoglu on Thursday. Dashnaktsutyun chairman, Vaan Ovannisian, said Tuesday the move was due to Cavusoglu’s decision not to pay tribute to the monument to the alleged Ottoman-era genocide of Armenians. Ovannisian claimed that all previous PACE heads have visited the memorial during their visits to Armenia.
Armen Rustamian, head of the parliamentary commission for external issues, has also declined to meet Cavusoglu.
Cavusoglu is the first Turk to have been elected PACE president so far.*
