Turkish energy minister attacked at soldier`s funeral
Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz was attacked Monday in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri while attending the funeral for a soldier who died last week, news agencies reported.
Gymnastics teacher Sahin Simsek punched Yildiz in the face while shouting, ``This is the fist of the Turkish people. Here is [a Kurdish] initiative,`` private news channel NTV reported.
Simsek was detained along with three other people after the attack. Yildiz, who was also a deputy from Kayseri, was injured in the attack, suffering scratches from his glasses.
Last week in the Southeast Anatolian province of Sirnak, a civilian minibus belonging to the military came under attack, injuring three soldiers. One of the three, Captain Levent Cetinkaya, died at the GATA military hospital on Sunday.
Interior Minister Besir Atalay participated in the funeral as well, while people protested the government`s move to ``solve`` the Kurdish issue. There had been media reports that the attack was carried out by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers` Party, or PKK. *
