Eastern Partnership summit due in 2011
The next summit on the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program that aims to boost the bloc’s cooperation with its ex-Soviet partners will be held in 2011, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski was quoted by the local media as saying.
Sikorski told a news conference with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Balazs in Budapest that the high-level meeting will take place in the first half of 2011, during Hungary’s chairmanship in the EU. This will be followed by a ministerial in the second half of the year, after Poland takes over as chair of the 27-member bloc.
The Eastern Partnership program, launched at an EU summit held in Prague in May 2009, covers Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus. The program envisages simplified visa regulations, free trade and closer energy cooperation. Membership in the bloc is not on the agenda at this point. The EU has allocated 600 million euros for the implementation of Eastern Partnership.*
