General Motors (GM) Uzbekistan will launch production of the Chevrolet Equinox crossover and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV in 2019, Podrobno.uz reports.
"In 2019, it is planned to master the production of two new types of cars - the Chevrolet Equinox crossover and the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV instead of everyone's favorite crossover Chevrolet Captiva. Production of cars will be established on the basis of GM Uzbekistan plants," Uzavtosanoat (Uzbek Association of Automotive Industry Enterprises) informed.
Aziz Shukurov, deputy chairman of Uzavtosanoat, said that this year, the company is working on the start of large-assembly of two cars in the SUV segment - that is, off-road vehicles.
"We removed the Captiva production in 2018, instead of which two new cars will be presented in this segment,” he said.
The Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size crossover, the prototype of which was first introduced in 2003 at the Detroit Auto Show. In 2008, a new version of Chevrolet Equinox called Sport was introduced. The technical equipment of the crossover was thoroughly revised.
Chevrolet Trailblazer began to be produced at the Moraine plant in Ohio in September 2001. In 2013, General Motors introduced a completely new generation of this SUV. As a true all-terrain vehicle, it is based on the frame structure of the body. A continuous rear axle and a decent ground clearance of 220 mm help against bad roads.
GM Uzbekistan, formerly known as UzDaewooAuto, was created in 1996 on a parity basis by Uzbekistan and South Korean Daewoo Motors.
In 2005, Uzbekistan acquired Daewoo's shares in UzDaewooAuto. Two years later Uzavtosanoat and the U.S.-based General Motors signed an agreement to establish GM Uzbekistan with an authorized capital of $266.7 million.
Currently, 10 car models of the Chevrolet and Ravon brands are produced at the three production sites of GM Uzbekistan. In particular, Matiz, Spark (R2), Nexia (R3), Cobalt models (R4), Lacetti (Gentra) are produced at the main production in the Asaka city; Captiva and Malibu models - in the Tashkent branch; and Damas and Labo models are produced in the Pitnak branch.
