Armenian elected to Kurdish parliament
An ethnic Armenian has won elections to parliament
in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq.
Panarmenian news agency reported that Aram-Shahin Baloyan has been elected to the 111-seat parliament from Massoud Barzani`s Democratic Kurdistan Party. He has taken part in the Barzani-led guerrilla units during the war.
Some analysts say the election of an ethnic Armenian to the northern Iraqi parliament may result in a large-scale settlement of Armenians there, which will inevitably lead to territorial claims for the oil-rich land.
