Armenia among states facing famine threat: report
The United Nations has voiced concern over the
economic situation in Armenia, the Paris-based French language
Armenia News daily reported.
According to the report, the UN World Food Program (WFP) has studied the challenges facing five countries grappling with the economic crisis. It concluded that the populations of Armenia, as well as Bangladesh, Ghana, Nicaragua and Zambia, are facing the threat of famine.
Josette Sheeran, WFP Executive Director, said research has revealed that the number of people facing hunger and poverty has increased in the countries studied. The persistent famine seen in Armenia in recent years has posed a serious threat to the country. According to Sheeran, if the predicament lingers on, the number of poor people in the South Caucasus republic will continuously rise, making things even worse for citizens this winter.
WFP experts have pointed out that a high unemployment rate, widespread corruption, arbitrariness, and looting the population by government officials seeking wealth are serious challenges for Armenia.
They also emphasized that exodus of able-bodied Armenian job-seekers to Russia and Europe is not a solution to the problem. On the contrary, Armenia`s workforce is shrinking. Thus, most of the country`s businesses are essentially non-operational and its industries are in a weakened state.
