Four US Congressmen hail Turkey-Armenia dialog
Several US Congressmen have voiced support for the
recent efforts aiming to normalize relations between Turkey and
Armenia that have been historically strained.
Four members of the Democratic Party represented in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the US legislature, threw their weight behind endeavors to achieve rapprochement in Ankara-Yerevan ties in a letter forwarded to Presidents Abdullah Gul and Serzh Sarkisian. The document was signed by Congressmen Robert Wexler, Ike Skelton, John Murtha, and Alcee Hastings, Voice of America Turkish service reported.
The signatories welcomed talks scheduled between the two countries` leaders for April.
Congressman Wexler of Florida said the United States and the world community as a whole deem as vital the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia as well as steps being taken to foster dynamics in the Caucasus region. He indicated that removing mutual misunderstanding, forging diplomatic ties and cooperation between the two countries serves the interests of not only Ankara and Yerevan but also those of the U.S.
Armenia and Turkey have been at odds and the border between the two countries has been closed since 1993 on Ankara`s insistence due to Armenia`s policy of occupation of Azerbaijani territory and Armenian genocide claims. Yerevan is failing both to end occupation and to relinquish its territorial claims against Turkey as well as continues propagating the alleged genocide all over the world. However, there have been signs of normalization in Ankara-Yerevan ties of late, and the two countries` officials have held several rounds of talks on various levels.
