Georgia may sell main pipelines
Georgia is going to allow its trunk gas pipeline to be privatized. The North-South gas pipeline rehabilitated through the U.S. government's assistance is on the list.
A new bill on state property, initiated by the chairman of parliamentary judicial committee, Pavle Kublashvili, will allow the main gas pipeline in Georgia to be privatised.
According to Kublashvili, the parliament is planning to adopt the new bill in July.
"The principle is very simple – the private sector always manages an enterprise better than the government. This is an undeniable fact for all those who support free economic relations. Therefore, none of the enterprises should be excluded from privatization," Kublashvili said.
He declined to comment if the government is planning to sell its trunk gas pipeline and whether there is a specific buyer.
Back in 2005, Georgia sought to sell its gas pipeline to Russian behemoth Gasprom.
However, these plans failed due to staunch opposition from the United States.
