SOCAR implements geological exploration on onshore fields

By Nigar Abbasova

Azerbaijan’s energy major SOCAR has carried out seismic, gravity measurement, and magnetometric surveys on the Zardab, Shikhbagy and Gishlag oil and gas onshore fields located on the territory of Yevlakh-Agjabadi deflection in Azerbaijan.

The seismic survey covered an area of some 178.5 square kilometers, while gravity measurement and magnetometric operations covered 345 linear kilometers.

The work was implemented to define the geological structure of the field, study the hydrocarbon potential of the area, and create conditions for exploration drilling in the right direction.

Offshore and onshore geophysical and geo-technical work is being performed by Geophysics and Geology Department of SOCAR. The department conducts surveys, exploratory drilling, and research at all of Azerbaijan's onshore and Caspian offshore areas.

SOCAR’s Azneft production association (the enterprises producing oil and gas onshore and offshore) is the customer of the project.

SOCAR is the sole producer of oil products in Azerbaijan. Along with Azneft, SOCAR includes Azerkimya (the chemical industry enterprises) and Azerigaz production associations. The company also has a number of processing enterprises, service enterprises, and institutions involved in geophysical and drilling operations.

The country holds 0.4 percent of the world’s total proven oil reserves, and produce 1 percent of the world’s oil total output according to the BP Statistical review of World Energy 2015.

Azerbaijan’s proven gas reserves as of early 2016 amounted to 1.1 trillion cubic meters, which accounts for 0.6 percent of global proven gas reserves, according to BP's estimates.
