Official downplays `Russia`s blocking resolution` on Garabagh
An Azerbaijani official has said he was unaware of Russia`s blocking the adoption of a resolution on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict at a recent OSCE meeting of ministers.
The remarks by Novruz Mammadov, head of the President`s Office, international relations department, came after Matthew Bryza, the US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering the peace process, stated that Moscow had impeded the passage of the resolution at the meeting of the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers held in Helsinki December 4-5.
In response, Mammadov said he had seen this statement in the media but was unaware of this being Russia`s official stance. "After Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov speaks in this regard, the issue will be clarified. [But, in any case] I don`t believe Russia would adhere to a contrary position with respect to a conflict settlement within Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity."
He added that finding a solution in line with the integrity principle and the norms of international law would, actually, benefit Russia more than continued hostilities would.
