CE chief lauds president`s role in democracy advances
Terry Davis, the Council of Europe Secretary General, has praised Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev`s efforts in promoting democratic development in the country.
"The fact that Azerbaijan has accomplished a great deal in the area of democracy in a short time, first of all, is linked to President Aliyev`s name," Davis told reporters.
Terry Davis, the CE secretary general, said he was well acquainted with President Aliyev as well as with former President Heydar Aliyev, who is considered one of the remarkable political figures of the present-day. He stressed that Heydar Aliyev was an experienced and outstanding head of state. "I held him in deep respect and highly appreciated his service."
Further, Davis said he confided in and praised President Aliyev`s efforts to modernize and develop his country.
Touching on Azerbaijan`s October 15 presidential election, Davis said it was democratic.
"As secretary general, I have no doubt, whatsoever, about Ilham Aliyev`s having been elected president. His re-election was in full compliance with the law."
Davis also said he was fond of the Azerbaijani people and had always sensed the same attitude toward himself. He said one of Azerbaijan`s outstanding values was its position on ethnic minorities, referring to the country`s exemplary record of tolerance.
Davis is preparing to pay a visit to the South Caucasus republic in early December and is due to attend a meeting of the CE culture ministers in Baku. During the visit, he also intends to meet with President Aliyev.
