Azerbaijan enjoys good ties with Australia
By Laman Sadigova
Azerbaijan- Australia relations was a topic of discussions during the meeting of Khanlar Fatiyev, the Azerbaijani MP, head of the working group on the Azerbaijan-Australia interparliamentary relations and President of the Australian Senate Stephen Parry in Canberra on September 14.
The sides mainly mulled the ways for deepening interparliamentary ties, as well as the development of business, economic, social and humanitarian relations between the countries.
Touching upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict due to Armenia’s illegal claims on Nagorno-Karabakh, the MP reminded that Armenia illegally occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani internationally recognized territories and more than one million Azerbaijanis have become refugees and IDPs.
The MP handed over Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov`s official invitation letter to Stephen Parry to visit Azerbaijan. The invitation was accepted.
On the same day, Khanlar Fatiyev held meetings with some officials of the Australian parliament.
The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Australia stood at $4.937 million as of 2014, which is 2.4 times less than in 2013, according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee.
The trade turnover between the two countries is made up mostly of Azerbaijan's exports of crude petroleum to Australia.
