Regional states under threat from Russia: top US official
Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine -- countries soon to be visited by
US Vice-President Dick Cheney -- are under a threat from Russia, US
Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried has said.
"Nonetheless, the U.S. will not rush in on taking action against Russia, as a lot of issues have to be reviewed first," Fried said.
Cheney was due to begin a visit to the three countries, as well as Italy, on Tuesday on orders of US President George Bush.
Fried voiced hope that Russia would soon realize that it was isolating itself. "It is self-isolation, rather than any action by the U.S.," he said.
Fried said, further, that assistance to Georgia, which has recently faced a violent conflict with Russia, was Washington`s top priority. "We are having to counter Moscow`s attempts to expand its sphere of influence and redraw Eurasia`s borders."
