The international relationships faculty of Mexican Ibero-American University held a conference on Azerbaijan's significance in the energy sector.

The news was announced by Azerbaijan's embassy in Mexico on November 5.

Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan's Ambassador Ilgar Mukhtarov said that besides a profitable geographical location and cultural, scientific, and economic potentials, Azerbaijan was also known for its rich natural resources, including oil and gas.

Talking about the history of Azerbaijan's oil industry, Mukhtarov pointed out that only after gaining independence Azerbaijani people could use their own natural resources.

He also said that one of the main areas of the country's oil strategy was exporting oil to the global market.

The diplomat highlighted Azerbaijan's important role in the energy security of Europe, and also touched upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Mukhtarov also met with Téofilo Torres Corzo, Mexico's Deputy Senate Chairman on relations with Asia-Pacific countries.

The sides emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy between Azerbaijan and Mexico, expressed confidence in the potentials of energy cooperation between the two countries, and discussed cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other fields.

During the meeting, the importance of opening Mexico's diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan in the near future was discussed. The sides also expressed confidence that the mutual visits of officials from both countries would contribute to the further development of relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico.

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Mexico were established in February 1992, and the legal framework for bilateral cooperation includes 5 documents.
