Sudan recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and supports the country's fair position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, Sudanese Presidential Adviser Nafie Ali Nafi, who is on a visit to Baku, said on November 1.

Nafie said that Sudan highly appreciates the efforts of Azerbaijan towards the settlement of the Armenian- Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions. The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.

Nafie went on to say that Sudan attaches great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan in all spheres.

He said further deepening of relations with Azerbaijan is very important for Sudan.

According to Nafie, the visit of a large Sudanese delegation to Azerbaijan to partake in the third Baku International Humanitarian Forum, shows that the country attaches great importance to the development of comprehensive relations with Azerbaijan.

The two-day forum opened at the Heydar Aliyev Center on October 31, with participation of high level guests.

Baku International Humanitarian Forum is a high-profile global scientific and political platform for tackling the challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, holding dialogue, discussions and exchange of views on a wide range of issues of humanitarian cooperation. It is an annual event that brings together outstanding representatives of political, scientific and cultural elite of the world, including well-known statesmen, Nobel Prize winners in various fields of science and heads of influential international organizations.

President Ilham Aliyev and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev initiated the Forum in 2010.

Representatives of natural, social sciences and humanities, as well as the cultural elite of the world who have set the ambitious task of forming a new humanitarian agenda with a view to further considering it on the worldwide scale are the organizers and participants of the forum.

With its rich traditions of cooperation among different cultures, civilizations and religions, Azerbaijan is the ideal venue for holding such events.
