Pressure group urges end to peace talks
The hard-line Garabagh Liberation Organization (GLO) has said
Azerbaijan should discontinue peace talks on the Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh conflict under way with Armenia.
"The negotiations do not meet Azerbaijan's interests," the group's
chairman Akif Naghi told a conference, "Garabagh talks leading to
defeatist peace and society", on Friday.
He said negotiating with the regime in Armenia was wrong, as the
individuals represented in the country's highest echelons of power
were directly involved in the invasion of Azerbaijan's territories
and the killings of innocent Azerbaijanis.
In a statement passed in conclusion of the event, the GLO demanded
to immediately halt the OSCE Minsk Group-brokered talks and ban
visits by representatives of international groups to Upper Garabagh
through Armenian territory.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in
the late 1980s due to Armenia's territorial claims. Armenia has
been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized
territory since the early 1990s. Years of peace talks have brought
little tangible result. Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly
warned against Armenia's policy of aggression, saying the country's
land will be freed at any cost.
