Paper fined over insult of subway head

A court in the Azerbaijani capital Baku ruled last Wednesday that opposition newspaper Azadlig is to pay 30,000 manat (around $38,000) compensation to the head of the city`s subway administration over moral damages.

Taghi Ahmadov filed a lawsuit against Azadlig after it published an article in April accusing him of appropriating funds. Ahmadov indicated that the article was biased and insulted his honor and dignity.

The plaintiff had requested that the Yasamal district court issue a ruling obliging the newspaper to publish a retraction and pay compensation totaling 200,000 manats ($254,000).

The defense intends to appeal the ruling.
