Paper slammed over report on president`s fancy watch

25 April 2012 09:12 (UTC+04:00)

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev`s press service has accused the local opposition newspaper Azadlig of publishing a false report about the president`s allegedly expensive wrist watch, AzerTAj state news agency reported.

The press service demanded that the newspaper apologize and issue a retraction within three days, warning to solve the issue in the legal realm otherwise.

It said that the report in Tuesday`s issue of Azadlig, which said President Aliyev uses a watch worth $800,000, is baseless and a lie. It added that the president wears a watch which is made of plain metal, is regular and inexpensive.

Azadlig said in a statement that it had derived information about the president`s watch from the web-blog of a public activist named Vafa Jafarova. The newspaper said the report had been published only because it is of public interest and expressed regret that it could not contact the president`s press service.
