Ombudsman urges world to condemn violence against Azeris
The world community must finally give an objective assessment to the ongoing violence against Azerbaijani people committed by Armenians, Azerbaijan`s human rights commissioner said in a recent statement addressed to influential international organizations.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said in the statement, issued on the occasion of March 31, Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis, that as a result of deliberate policy of ethnic cleansing, genocide and deportation of Azerbaijanis, pursued by Armenian nationalists and their supporters over the past two centuries, Azerbaijanis faced severe suffering.
The statement stresses that 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory was invaded, tens of thousands of people were killed, and hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons as a result of the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan which began in 1988. An even more terrible tragedy is the genocide of Azerbaijanis committed by Armenians on March 31, 1918, it said.
Armenia`s failure to comply with the UN resolutions on an unconditional pullout of its troops and the international community`s turning a blind eye to it sets a negative precedent, the Ombudsman noted.
The statement was sent to the Secretary General of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN, the European Commission, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, the International Ombudsman Institute and the European and Asian Ombudsman associations, the International Peace Bureau, Universal Peace Federation, ombudsmen from numerous countries, and embassies of foreign countries in Azerbaijan, as well as Azerbaijani diaspora organizations abroad.
