Armenian analyst accuses Azeri secret service of attack plot
An Armenian political analyst has accused Azerbaijan's secret
service of orchestrating an attempt on his life.
Levon Melik-Shahnazarian told journalists in Yerevan that the testimony given by an individual arrested on Thursday allegedly confirmed the suspicion that the plot to attack him had been ordered from Azerbaijan.
Melik-Shahnazarian noted that the detainee was not an Armenian citizen.
In his account of the developments, the analyst said he was fired upon while in his home located in a village near the capital on April 22, but the bullets hit the window frame. He said that a week later, the assailants contacted him, demanding that he stop his political analysis activity. They threatened to kill him and his family members otherwise.
Melik-Shahnazarian claimed that the plot to kill him could have come from Azerbaijan over his story entitled "Aggressor state, the state of aggressors" carried by the Russia-based Karabahski Express journal in 2007. "In that article, I had questioned the legitimacy of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's coming to power and stressed that his authority is concentrated in the same hands."
Melik-Shahnazarian was born in Azerbaijan's northwestern city of Ganja in 1958. In 1988-97, he lived in Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azeri region currently under Armenian occupation. Melik-Shahnazarian has served as a member of the self-proclaimed republic's "parliament". He has lived in Yerevan in the past 11 years and currently heads a department at the Yerevan University of International Relations.
