Over 1,000 servicemen to take part in NATO events
Azerbaijani servicemen will take part in some 170 events of NATO this year. Over 1,000 officers are to be involved in the activities, Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said.
Abiyev said his country was closely cooperating with the alliance. All types of its armed forces are currently in transition to NATO standards, and exercises of the Azerbaijani army are always conducted in line with these standards.
"Since 2007, the Azerbaijani army began to do away with the former Soviet standards. First of all, the rules of the previous system inconsistent with NATO standards are being eliminated," the minister said.
Abiyev disagreed with statements that the entire arms arsenal should be replaced during the transition. "A great quantity of Soviet-made weapons is still available in the armed forces of NATO states, and they are still being used."
Abiyev said the Azerbaijani military was cooperating with the armed forces of some 50 countries. The country has signed relevant agreements with 24 states, including Turkey, the United States, Pakistan, Britain, Germany, Hungary, and Bulgaria.
