NATO hopes for further Azeri peacekeeping in Afghanistan
A NATO official visiting Azerbaijan has thanked the country for its contribution to the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan and expressed confidence it would continue to take part in these operations.
James Appathurai, the NATO special envoy for the Caucasus and Central Asia, told journalists in Baku on Friday that he had discussed cooperation issues in a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev.
"30 percent of NATO cargo is delivered to Afghanistan with the use of Azerbaijani territory. President Ilham Aliyev assured NATO that Azerbaijan will remain a reliable ally of the alliance on the transit issue in the future," Appathurai said.
He stressed that NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation meets mutual interests and discussions on related issues will be continued in the near future.
According to Appathurai, the Azerbaijani president has been invited to the next NATO summit to be held in Chicago.
"I expect that he and the NATO secretary general will thoroughly discuss further cooperation between the alliance and Azerbaijan at this summit," Appathurai added.
Meetings with International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) countries will be held on the sidelines of the summit.
