Islamic group urges parliaments to recognize Khojaly genocide

The Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) at its session held in Palembang, Indonesia called upon the member parliaments to initiate from 2012 recognition of the massacre of Azerbaijani civilians committed by Armenian forces during the Karabakh war in 1992.

According to Elshad Iskandarov, Secretary General of Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation (ICYF-DC), who attended the session, PUIC, which comprises the parliaments of 51 OIC member states, demands bringing to justice the perpetrators of the Khojaly massacre. PUIC’s position was also reflected in the final declaration of the conference.

This recognition was a result of the "Justice for Khojaly" international public awareness campaign, initiated by Mrs. Leyla Aliyeva, ICYF-DC General Coordinator, and held since 2009.

PUIC reaffirmed its support for the "Justice for Khojaly" campaign.

"Justice for Khojaly" was launched on the day of anniversary of the occupation of the ancient Azerbaijani town of Shusha by Armenian armed forces. Currently, the campaign, which aims to convey the truth about the Khojaly tragedy to the world community and achieve its political, legal and moral assessment, is being successfully implemented in 35 countries worldwide.

Armenian troops on February 25-26, 1992 attacked Azerbaijani civilians in Khojaly, a town located in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Karabakh region. 613 people were brutally killed in the attack, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 elderly. 1,275 were taken captives, while 487 became handicapped and 190 went missing.
