Most Azeris reject the idea of USSR revival: poll

Citizens of Azerbaijan support the least the idea of reviving the Soviet Union, a recent poll of five former Soviet republics finds.

The poll was conducted by Russian Public Opinion Study Center in 46 regions across Russia, as well as in Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Lithuania. 1,600 people were polled in Russia and over 4,500 in the other four countries.

Respondents in Kyrgyzstan were the most supportive of re-uniting the USSR, with 67 percent public approval reported. In Belarus, 62 percent of those polled were in favor of the idea. Only 24 percent of Azerbaijanis and 26 percent of Lithuanians support integration among the ex-Soviet states, the poll found.

In Russia, 48 percent of respondents said they support integration. 23 percent of the Russian respondents supporting the USSR’s revitalization were in favor of voluntary integration based on equal rights, while 15 percent want this to happen within the customs union, which includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and the remaining 10 percent support the Eurasian Economic Union that would be based on the customs union. Only 8 percent of those polled said they opposed restoring ties among the former Soviet republics that existed during the USSR.
