Reporter detained in Baku on extortion charges
A reporter of Unikal, a little known Baku-based newspaper, has been detained on charges of extorting money, according to the interior ministry.
Huseyn Isgandarov had demanded money from Metleb Ahmadov, the owner of Romi hotel, located in the Masazir settlement of the Absheron district, threatening to publish an article disgracing him otherwise, the ministry said in a statement.
The journalist was arrested on Monday while taking 1,000 manats (around $1,280) from Ahmadov, during an operation carried out by law enforcers based on the hotel owner’s plea.
Investigators established that Isgandarov was earlier extorting money from the owners of two other local hotels.
