Argentinean MPs urge swift and fair Karabakh settlement

Argentinean parliament members have said on a visit to Baku that they hope for a speedy and fair settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

In a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, the MPs condemned Armenia's occupation of a part of Azerbaijani territory, expressing support for Azerbaijan and pledging to convey the truth about the country to the Argentinean public.

Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks, brokered by US, Russian and French mediators, have been largely fruitless so far.

Speakers at the meeting also stressed the vast potential for developing Argentina-Azerbaijan relations. The Argentinean lawmakers said they would inform their country’s relevant bodies about opportunities for bilateral cooperation in a variety of fields including agriculture, energy, industries and tourism.
