Azerbaijan unruffled by Russia’s joining military parade in Yerevan
Russian servicemen’s joining a military parade in the Armenian capital Yerevan on Wednesday is "an internal affair" of the two countries, an Azerbaijani presidential aide has said.
"Azerbaijan does not interfere with such issues," Ali Hasanov told an international conference in Baku on Friday devoted to the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades.
"Russian military units are stationed in Armenia, and Russia and Armenia have signed their own agreements. So, it is their [Moscow’s] personal business which policy they are pursuing in Armenia."
According to Hasanov, the main point for Azerbaijan is that the Russian military recognizes its territorial integrity and "does not meddle in our affairs".
"We don’t really have anything to reproach it for," Hasanov added.
During the independence parade, which was joined by 4,000 servicemen, including those from Russia’s military base in Armenia, scores of military machinery were showcased. Besides 300 combat vehicles, Armenia displayed Russian-made missile launchers, heavy artillery, air defense systems and spy drones.
Azerbaijan has been spending hefty funds on its armed forces and repeatedly warned it would take back part of its territory occupied by Armenian armed forces since a brutal war in the early 1990s if the ongoing peace talks yield no results.
