Iran’s Baku embassy picketed over lake evaporation
BAKU – A group of Azerbaijani youths protested outside the Iranian embassy in Baku on Friday at the drying-out of Lake Orumieh, one of the world's largest saltwater lakes, and violations of 35 million Azerbaijanis’ rights in Iran.
The protesters chanted slogans saying "Stop the drying-out of Lake Orumieh", symbolically put a water container in front of the embassy compound, and submitted a statement to the diplomatic mission.
The police dispersed the participants of the unauthorized picket, which was organized by the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC).
Lake Orumieh, Iran's largest lake, has shrunk by some 60 percent in recent years due to drought and misguided development policies. Environmentalists warn that unless something is done, the lake will disappear forever.
The lake is located in northwestern Iran near Turkey, between the provinces of East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan. It has a surface area of about 5,200 sq. km (2,000 sq. miles). At its maximum extent, the lake is about 140 km (87 miles) long and 55 km (34 miles) wide. Its deepest point is approximately 16m (52 ft) deep.
