BAKU – A protest was held outside the United Nations office in Baku on Tuesday over the 18th anniversary of the occupation of two Azerbaijani regions by Armenian troops.

The Karabakh Liberation Organization (KLO), which organized the protest, told AssA-Irada that its members held posters saying "Sanctions against invader Armenia", "Take terrorist [Armenian President] Sargsyan to an international court", "End to double standards", and "UN, enforce your resolutions or disband".

The protesters submitted a statement to the UN representation saying the UN secretary-general and Security Council are failing to take an unbiased stance and condemn the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territory. They demanded convening an extraordinary UN SC meeting and passing a decision to impose sanctions on Armenia, and having the Armenian leader stand trial in an international court of law.

The protesters were dispersed by the police.

Armenian armed forces invaded Azerbaijan's Fuzuli and Jabrayil regions on August 23, 1993. Five other Azerbaijani regions have also been occupied since the two countries signed a fragile ceasefire in 1994 following a brutal war, along with the Nagorno Karabakh region, which is at the core of the long-standing conflict. Efforts by US, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.

The UN has passed four resolutions on an unconditional pullout of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, but none of them have been implemented so far.
