Karabakh mediators’ talks with US official not detailed
WASHINGRON D.C. – OSCE mediators brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh met with a senior US official in Washington on Wednesday.
No details of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’ discussions with US Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns were disclosed. The co-chairs - Bernard Fassier of France, Igor Popov of Russia and Robert Bradtke of the United States – only said the meeting "was productive and gives us hope".
The US Department of State said prior to the meeting that Under Secretary Burns would discuss with the co-chairs their recent and upcoming activities. It also said Burns would reaffirm the United States’ "strong commitment" as a co-chair of the Minsk Group to helping the conflict parties achieve a lasting settlement of the dispute.
Azerbaijan and Armenia waged a brutal war in the early 1990s. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory has been under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces since a ceasefire was signed in 1994. Peace talks have been largely fruitless so far.
