Turkish president approves strategic deal with Azerbaijan
ANKARA – Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Monday endorsed the country’s strategic partnership deal with Azerbaijan that covers mutual military aid, CNN Turk TV channel reported.
The final approval of the agreement comes after its endorsement by the Turkish parliament early in March.
The 10-year agreement was signed in August 2010 in Baku by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Turkish counterpart. The Azerbaijani parliament ratified the deal last December.
The agreement covers mutual military assistance in case of an outside attack. Thus, if one of the two countries comes under a military incursion, the other signatory is to provide it with military aid, in accord with the UN bylaws.
Azerbaijan faces a two-decade-long conflict with neighboring Armenia. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war.
