Turkey approves Azerbaijan strategic partnership deal
ANKARA – The Turkish parliament on Thursday approved the country’s strategic partnership deal with Azerbaijan that covers mutual military aid, Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported.
The agreement is due to be further endorsed by the Turkish president.
The 10-year agreement was signed in August 2010 in Baku by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul. The Azerbaijani parliament ratified the deal last December.
The agreement covers mutual military assistance in case of an outside attack. Thus, if one of the two countries comes under a military incursion, the other signatory is to provide it with military aid, in accord with the UN bylaws.
Azerbaijan faces a two-decade-long conflict with neighboring Armenia. 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory has been under Armenian occupation since the two South Caucasus republics signed a precarious cease-fire in 1994 following a lengthy war.
