Azeri party leader arrested over hooliganism
BAKU- Chairman of the Azerbaijan National Statehood Party (ANSP) Nemet Panahly has been arrested on charges of hooliganism, an Interior Ministry spokesman has said.
A Baku district court ruled on Monday to hold Panahly in detention for two months pending trial. He could face three to seven years in jail, if convicted.
Ehsan Zahidov said that several days ago Panahly sold his old Toyota car to Baku resident Eldaniz Rzayev. While driving the vehicle, Rzayev found that it had malfunctions. He phoned Panahly and told him about the car trouble. The party leader, who further met with the buyer, beat him after an argument. Rzayev was hospitalized with injuries.
The Azerbaijan National Statehood Party was established in 1994. In the early years of its activity, the party supported the government, but then drifted to the opposition. Panahly had been one of the leaders of the National Liberation Movement following the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991. He served as a state adviser in 1993-94.
