British company’s illegal tours to Karabakh thwarted
BAKU – Tours to the Armenia-occupied Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, planned for August by British Regent Holidays travel agency, have been prevented by the Azerbaijani embassy in Britain.
The embassy said in a statement that it had contacted the company, warning that such visits would be deemed as a violation of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also informed Regent Holidays about the position of the international community and Britain, which recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, and said the persons who visit Nagorno Karabakh without Baku’s permission would be barred from coming to Azerbaijan in the future.
Regent Holidays executives said the company had cancelled its plans to arrange such tours and removed a relevant announcement from its website.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994. The separatist regime in the Nagorno Karabakh region, which is under Armenian occupation along with seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts, proclaimed so-called independence at the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991. This "independence" has not been recognized by any country.
