Azeri minister responds to Iranian cleric’s veil ban criticism
BAKU – Azerbaijani Education Minister Misir Mardanov has said the government’s decision on wearing veils in schools will be enforced and "no one should doubt that".
There is no explicit ban on the wearing of headscarves in schools, but the government in Baku this year introduced a standard school uniform which precludes traditional Islamic dress.
Mardanov said the measure mainly aims to enforce Azerbaijan’s laws.
Mardanov’s statement came in response to recent criticism of the decision by a senior Iranian cleric.
Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi had claimed that the Azerbaijani people should peacefully resist what he called an anti-Islamic decision and advised Azerbaijani officials "not to succumb to foreign instigators and hear the voice of their people".
