Opposition parties decline to meet PACE observers
STRASBOURG – The bloc of two major Azerbaijani opposition parties has declined to meet with the election observation mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
The mission will observe the November 7 parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan.
The bloc of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) and Musavat claimed in a statement that Council of Europe institutions, particularly PACE, have failed to take a firm stance on the elections held in the country in recent years. Moreover, Christopher Strasser was appointed rapporteur on the alleged political prisoners in March 2009, but he still has not arrived in Azerbaijan.
The APFP-Musavat bloc believes that the CE is not properly fulfilling its mission to promote democratic development in the country.
